The master of understated, but intoxicatingly thoughtful and humanist Japanese cinema, Kore-eda this time serves up a tale of morality and blurred boundaries, questioning the definition of family. Casual labourer Osamu makes his family money selling the wares collected by his thieving boy, Shota. Wife Noboyu works the laundry and steals as well, while daughter Aki participates in soft-porn shows in town, and grandmother Hatsue is an addicted gambler. When Osamu and Shota find a shivering young girl on the street, they take her in as their daughter and sister, a new protege for the family of thieves to train. Appearing neglected and abused by her own parents, despite calls on TV about her going missing, worries about returning her are allayed, but Shota creates cause for concern, when jealousy takes hold.
“His Cannes Competition film is a gorgeous thing, a kind of culmination of all of the director’s best qualities.”
